Why Choosing an L1 Pro Model Can Be Confusing
When the L1 Pro family was introduced in 2020, it didn’t map cleanly onto the older L1 systems. The new models were more capable—especially in bass performance—but the upgrades didn’t follow the familiar Compact → Middle → Best pattern from the legacy line.
Many of the most common questions arise because the L1 Pro models don’t map cleanly to the older L1 systems. When users run into challenges, it’s natural to compare models—especially since the differences in projection, bass response, and use‑case aren’t always obvious from the spec sheets.

But the real‑world performance doesn’t line up as neatly as the table suggests:
- L1 Pro8 is clearly better than the L1 Compact, in mid-high frequency projection and especially in bass response
- L1 Pro16 outperforms both the Model 1S and the Model II in bass, because the older systems shared the same bass modules.
- Projection ("throw over distance") differences:
- L1 Pro16 is similar to but better than L1 Model 1S
- L1 Pro16 is NOT equal to the L1 Model II
- L1 Pro32 + Sub1 has better throw than the L1 Model II and similar bass to the L1 Pro16.
- L1 Pro32 + Sub2 is the premium combination.
- L1 Pro16 bass output in dB SPL is similar to the Sub1, not the Sub2, even though they have the same-sized racetrack driver.
The Part That’s Hard to Explain but Matters Most on Stage
Performing with an L1 Pro32 (with either Sub1 or Sub2) is a qualitatively different experience.
To hit 85 dB SPL at 20 metres, the Pro32 can run at a lower stage volume than any other L1 model.
Because the L1 is designed to sit behind you, lower stage volume means:
- cleaner monitoring
- less fatigue
- more consistent coverage
- fewer feedback issues
This is the kind of insight that only emerges from real‑world use, not spec sheets.
