New page

General Questions
Where did these questions and answers come from?
These are questions that come from people who use Bose L1 Pro systems. The answers are from Bose, authoritative sources, best practices in the field and first-hand experiences.

How much coverage can I get?
Several factors determine how large an area you can cover with your sound:
* The distance to the listener farthest away
* The noise level in the listening area
* Walls and boundaries that affect reflections that support low frequencies

Use the chart in Throw Over Distance to see performance over distance for different models. This helps predict how well you can be heard at a distance.

Are the columns made of plastic?
Arrays on all units feature an extruded aluminum sleeve. Perforated grille on the front, solid on the back.
Source: Craig Small

Do the L1 Pro systems wobble?
Some wobble is normal due to the mechanical design of the column and base. Ensure the array sections are fully seated.

New Owner Questions
How do I update the firmware?
See L1 Pro Firmware for full details. Firmware updates are performed using the Bose app or a computer, depending on the model.

What is the Bose App and how do I get it?
The Bose App allows you to control settings on the L1 Pro (volume, bass, treble, reverb) and access advanced features like ToneMatch Presets and Scenes.

Operating the L1 Pro General Questions
What is System EQ on the L1 Pro Power Stand?
System EQ adjusts the overall tonal balance of the system for different placement scenarios (e.g., on the floor, on a table, against a wall). See the L1 Pro documentation for details.

Can I swap the columns from different models?
No. While the column arrays and extensions of the L1 Pro8 and L1 Pro16 will physically fit each other, no sound comes out.

L1 Pro32: Can I use only the lower section of the array?
Yes.
The L1 Pro32 can be used without the upper array when ceiling height is limited. The system automatically adjusts bass output to maintain spectral balance.

Best practices:
* Keep the array at ear level for listeners
* Expect reduced projection over distance
* Higher volume may increase feedback risk

ToneMatch Mixers (T1/T4S/T8S) and the L1 Pro
How do I connect a T4S to the L1 Pro?
When adding a T4S:
* T4S inputs and controls operate independently from the L1 Pro
* L1 Pro inputs operate the same whether or not a T4S is connected
* You can connect one or two L1 Pros using the ToneMatch ports

See to L1 Pro for full details.

How do I connect a T8S to the L1 Pro?
Similar to the T4S:
* T8S inputs and controls operate independently from the L1 Pro
* L1 Pro inputs operate the same whether or not a T8S is connected
* You can connect one L1 Pro via ToneMatch, or use XLR/TRS outputs

See to L1 Pro for details.

How do I connect a T1 to an L1 Pro?
See T1 to L1 Pro for full instructions.

Inputs and Connections
Is MIC/INST/OFF the same as a MIC/LINE switch?
No.
The MIC/INST/OFF switch does not change input sensitivity or gain.
It only selects the ToneMatch Preset applied to the input.

Does the MIC/INST/OFF switch change the input gain?
No.
It only selects the ToneMatch Preset. It does not adjust gain staging or level.

How do I connect a monitor?
* Use the L1 Pro Line Out to feed a monitor.
* For S1 Pro, see L1 Pro to S1 Pro
* For S1 Pro+, see L1 Pro to S1 Pro+
* To run inputs into S1 Pro+ and send output to L1 Pro, see S1 Pro+ To L1 Pro
* With a mixer, send the monitor mix from the mixer instead of the L1 Pro

The L1 Pro is designed to be placed behind performers, reducing the need for monitors.
See The L1® Approach and the History Of Amplification.

How do I connect a third-party mixer?
Use the mixer’s Mono Output → L1 Pro Channel 3.

If the mixer has XLR outputs:
: Mixer Mono Out → XLR-to-TRS → L1 Pro Channel 3

If the mixer has TRS outputs:
: Mixer Mono Out → TRS → L1 Pro Channel 3

See Mixer to L1 Pro for details.

Can I use XLR cables from my mixer into Channels 1 or 2?
You can, and it might work, but there are issues.

1. Some mixers have a MIC/LINE or -20 dB switch on the XLR output
* If available, engage it.
* If not, use Channel 3 instead.

2. Most mixer XLR outputs are line-level
* This mismatches the L1 Pro’s mic-level XLR inputs
* Can cause clipping, distortion, unpredictable behavior

3. You can sometimes “make it work”
* Turn down mixer output
* Turn down L1 Pro channel volume
But:
* Lower mixer output increases hiss
* Very low L1 Pro settings reduce usable range
* Volume may jump unpredictably

4. Channel 3 avoids all issues
* Designed for line-level
* Full +24 dBu headroom
* No ToneMatch presets
* No DSP gain steps

Recommended:
: Mixer Mono Out → XLR-to-TRS → L1 Pro Channel 3

Why are Channels 1 and 2 louder than Channel 3?
Channel 3 has lower input sensitivity by design to handle line-level sources.
You may need to turn Channel 3 higher to match levels.
See Mixer to L1 Pro for more information.

Multiple L1 Pro Systems
What can I do with multiple L1 Pros?
They can:
* Daisy chain audio using Line Out
* Play the same signal from a mixer
* Operate as a stereo pair

They cannot:
* Share internal inputs
* Combine inputs from two units
* Link via Bluetooth

How do I daisy chain two L1 Pros?
Use:
: L1 Pro Line Out → TRS → L1 Pro Channel 3

See L1 Pro Daisy Chain.

Can I use Bluetooth to connect two L1 Pros?
No.
Bluetooth is receive-only and has too much latency for live sound.

Can I run two L1 Pros as a single mono system?
You cannot combine all six inputs across two units.
To get identical mono feeds:
: Mixer Mono Out → L1 Pro (Left) Channel 3
: Mixer Mono Out → L1 Pro (Right) Channel 3

See Dual Mono.

How do I connect two L1 Pros for stereo?
: Mixer LEFT → L1 Pro (Left) Channel 3
: Mixer RIGHT → L1 Pro (Right) Channel 3

See Mixer to L1 Pro.

Can I connect my L1 Pros so they share inputs?
No.
Daisy chaining is one-way only.
Sending audio back creates a feedback loop.

Troubleshooting
The L1 Pro sounds muddy
Symptoms:
* No mid-highs
* Low volume
* Excessive bass

Cause:
* Column array or extension not seated properly

Solution:
* Ensure the array sections are firmly seated

Excessive Hiss
Hiss with nothing connected:
* Turning up volume amplifies noise
Solution: turn down volume or mute unused channels
See L1 Pro Hiss

Hiss when daisy chaining:
* Line Out is line-level
* XLR input is mic-level
Solution: Line Out → TRS → Channel 3
See L1 Pro Daisy Chain

Hiss when connecting a mixer to Channels 1 or 2:
* Use Mixer Mono Out → TRS → Channel 3
See Mixer to L1 Pro

Feedback Issues
See Feedback FAQ for detailed information.
