September 30, 2007 - October 1, 2007

You should plan to be in Cuchara no later than Sunday afternoon. Some of you may want to take advantage of the trip to spend extra days. We'll have music on Sunday evening. Then, we'll conference on Monday day and evening (more music) and we're out on Tuesday. Loved ones are welcome to join us.

For accommodations, there are rooms at the Cuchara Inn (where we'll hold the conference) and the Yellow Pine Ranch just up the road that are available to us at a fair price. Rooms at the Inn are standard hotel rooms. Cabins and a few houses are available for families and groups at the Yellow Pine (more details to follow).

== Weather (What to Wear) ==

The weather can vary quite a bit at this time of year. Here's a historic temperature average I found:

* The Average High Temperature is 62 F with a historical range of 48 F to 71 F.
* The Average Low Temperature is 42 F with a historical range of 35 F to 48 F.

It is usually dry & sunny with little wind.

The altitude is 7100 feet, so expect mountain weather.

== Things to Do in the Area ==

There are lots of things for you & your family to do in the area. Check out these websites for information. We may be able to get some special group rates on train rides on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. The area is beautiful in a different way than most expect for Colorado.

Several folks have expressed interest in a hike Monday morning led by Willson & McKee before the first event. Here are Ken Willson's notes:

Hello to all Hikemiesters!

Lets meet at 7am Monday by the Timbers in Cucharra and head up. There is parking at the top for a $5 Fee. We will bring our Ford Econoline and can carry a number of folks willing to sit on the floor or campchairs. (we only have two seats installed). This hike is for beginning hikers but pays off with advanced beauty. The only issue is the 11,000 ft elevation. Barring a Gilligans island scenario we'll be back by 10, after all, this is just a 3 hour tour....

You don't need hiking gear, street shoes would work in a pinch tho warm layers would be advisable and a bit of H2o for the end.

One of my activities at this conference will be making custom ToneMatch(TM) filters for individual artists. Bring your instrument(s) and we'll get the tone you want, I guarantee it (ever see "Mens' Warehouse" commercials on TV?). The exact manifestation of this is unknown at present but the path to the answer is in motion. At worse, we'll get the tone and it will be posted in a few weeks after the conference for download to the T1. At best, it will show up on your own T1. September 30, 2007 - October 1, 2007

You should plan to be in Cuchara no later than Sunday afternoon. Some of you may want to take advantage of the trip to spend extra days. We'll have music on Sunday evening. Then, we'll conference on Monday day and evening (more music) and we're out on Tuesday. Loved ones are welcome to join us.

== Weather (What to Wear) ==

The weather can vary quite a bit at this time of year. Here's a historic temperature average I found:

* The Average High Temperature is 62 F with a historical range of 48 F to 71 F.
* The Average Low Temperature is 42 F with a historical range of 35 F to 48 F.

It is usually dry & sunny with little wind.

The altitude is 7100 feet, so expect mountain weather.

There are lots of things for you & your family to do in the area. Check out these websites for information. We may be able to get some special group rates on train rides on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. The area is beautiful in a different way than most expect for Colorado.

Several folks have expressed interest in a hike Monday morning led by Willson & McKee before the first event. Here are Ken Willson's notes:

Hello to all Hikemiesters!

Lets meet at 7am Monday by the Timbers in Cucharra and head up. There is parking at the top for a $5 Fee. We will bring our Ford Econoline and can carry a number of folks willing to sit on the floor or campchairs. (we only have two seats installed). This hike is for beginning hikers but pays off with advanced beauty. The only issue is the 11,000 ft elevation. Barring a Gilligans island scenario we'll be back by 10, after all, this is just a 3 hour tour....

You don't need hiking gear, street shoes would work in a pinch tho warm layers would be advisable and a bit of H2o for the end.

September 30, 2007 - October 1, 2007

You should plan to be in Cuchara no later than Sunday afternoon. Some of you may want to take advantage of the trip to spend extra days. We'll have music on Sunday evening. Then, we'll conference on Monday day and evening (more music) and we're out on Tuesday. Loved ones are welcome to join us.

== Weather (What to Wear) ==

The weather can vary quite a bit at this time of year. Here's a historic temperature average I found:

* The Average High Temperature is 62 F with a historical range of 48 F to 71 F.
* The Average Low Temperature is 42 F with a historical range of 35 F to 48 F.

It is usually dry & sunny with little wind.

The altitude is 7100 feet, so expect mountain weather.

There are lots of things for you & your family to do in the area. Check out these websites for information. We may be able to get some special group rates on train rides on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. The area is beautiful in a different way than most expect for Colorado.

Several folks have expressed interest in a hike Monday morning led by Willson & McKee before the first event. Here are Ken Willson's notes:

Hello to all Hikemiesters!

Lets meet at 7am Monday by the Timbers in Cucharra and head up. There is parking at the top for a $5 Fee. We will bring our Ford Econoline and can carry a number of folks willing to sit on the floor or campchairs. (we only have two seats installed). This hike is for beginning hikers but pays off with advanced beauty. The only issue is the 11,000 ft elevation. Barring a Gilligans island scenario we'll be back by 10, after all, this is just a 3 hour tour....

You don't need hiking gear, street shoes would work in a pinch tho warm layers would be advisable and a bit of H2o for the end.

Q: What is a Pad?

A "pad" is short for an "Attenuation Pad".

This is a device used to lower the signal level between two other devices.

"attenuator or attenuator pad Electronics. A passive network that reduces the voltage (or power; see usage note under gain) level of a signal with negligible distortion, but with insertion loss. Often a purely resistive network, although any combination of inductors, resistors and capacitors are possible, a pad may also provide impedance matching."

We use them with our Bose Systems when running a pro level +4 dBu signal (e.g. output from a mixer) to the XLR inputs on Channels 1 or 2 on the PS1 Powerstand. We want to do this because the input sensitivity for these inputs is set for microphones. To get a better match for levels between the source and our inputs, we can use a pad.

Values of attenuation are expressed in decibels, dB. dBu/dBV/dBm are ratios/references. dBm is a ratio of power, relative to 1mW. dBu and dBV are ratios of voltage, relative to 0.775V and 1V, respectively. When determining how much of a pad is needed, we want to compare apples-to-apples by converting specs (e.g. http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-db-volt.htm) to a common reference. For the 'mixer line-output to PS1 mic-input' scenario, -20 dB is a good choice because it brings the hot, line-level signal down to a lower voltage range that a mic pre can easily handle.

Pads can also help when connecting the PS1 Line Outs to ''semi-pro'' or ''consumer'' recording devices. If the PS1 Line Outs are too ''hot'' for the recorder's inputs, a pad can be used to prevent overdriving those inputs into (clipping) distortion.

A -20dB pad is also a good choice when connecting the PS1 Line Outs to a house PA, or other off-stage system. This would ensure that the house mixing console's inputs can handle the signal level without being overdriven into distortion, especially if the house console has insufficient built-in pads, or none at all. (Beware of the potential for Ground Loops here.)

=== Hearing yourself ===

This is a different approach to amplifying your sound. There is typically only one amplified version of your sound entering the room. That will be the Cylindrical Radiator®. Typically it will be set up behind you. Unlike conventional approaches, you will not be behind the main speakers going to the room.

How does it sound? - It may seem unusual for a few minutes because you are hearing yourself in much the same way the audience is hearing you. This is a big difference because you will be hearing yourself in the context of the room instead of out of context in the monitor.
Where do I stand? - Usually in front of the Cylindrical Radiator®. Sometimes beside it. If you are in front of it, an ideal would be approximately 7-10 feet. This is easy to work out if you have the standard 15 foot cable. Assuming you have the Remote mounted on your mic stand, the cable should be a straight run back to the Power Stand.
Where is the monitor? - No monitor required. You will be hearing yourself through the same Cylindrical Radiator® that the audience is hearing.
Where is the reverb? - This is typically not required because you will be hearing the natural reverb in the room not a monitor mix from a floor wedge.

"Sing as loud as you're going to sing with your lips touching the windscreen and adjust the trim so that the LED just flickers RED. (You can do this with the channel and master volumes on the remote turned all the way down. Remember that when you want to be your loudest vocally, you're lips should be touching the windscreen. You can always "work" the mic by backing away from it to lower volume but always remember that when you need to be loudest, you're kissing that windscreen. This technique is true for ANY live amplification system, not just ours. Please stay in touch with us here and let us know how you, er, well, make out." -- Ken-at-Bose

You will probably find that you hear yourself better with this system than in other live music situations. If you are new to the experience, you may want to back off from the microphone. Try this instead. Get up closer to the mic. Relax and get used to hearing yourself. You will find it is easier to sing when you can hear.

"Many owners, myself included, have found singing through {{L1}}s to be reminiscent of singing in unamplified groups (big family, in my case), but different, sonically better. Unamplified, we control our timbre and dynamics with just our bodies - No mics to ''technique''. With the {{L1}}, staying ''on the mic'' (the simplest of techniques) allows us to sing that way, using our ''head to toes'' as our preamp and our ''lungs'' as our volume control. Here's where it gets better - With much more available volume, therefore much more dynamic range and coverage way out into the room, we can still bring it down to that unamplified-level whisper (and everyone, singers and audience, can hear every nuance - I love that!), then bring it back up to the brink of ''ouch''! Feedback occurs when sound coming from the Cylindrical Radiator® is reintroduced into the System and amplified again. You typically hear either a high pitched squeal or a low pitched howl. The first usually comes from a vocal microphone and the second is more likely from an acoustic instrument like a Guitar.

The R1 Remote gives you the final say about how you will sound in performance. The System once set properly is very stable and does not require a lot of real time tweaking. It is there for you to use if you want, but it does not have to distract you from doing the show.

Find the Master Level (ringed in red - center bottom of the R1 Remote). This is your main control for all the sound coming out of the System. You will want to turn it down when you are not actively using the System.
Use Channel 1 and 2 Level controls (just above the Master) to work out the balance between the two channels.

Use the Tone controls. Start with all these straight up at 12 o'clock and adjust to suit you.

Important: There is a tiny delay between making an adjustment and hearing the difference. Make small adjustments and then listen for difference. Otherwise you may tend add too much EQ.
Make sure that the Remote is visible and easily accessible to you as you are playing. Use the velcro to make it stationary so you can adjust the controls with one hand.

You and your audience are going to be hearing your performance in a new way. To be heard and understood you will probably run your stage at a lower volume than you have with other equipment.

== Getting Ready ==
This section will suggest things that you can do to prepare to use the System for the first time. For example:
Rehearsal

When you are rehearsing, stand or sit in the same positions as you will when performing. You want to hear yourself in the same way in rehearsal and performance so that making the transition from one to the other is relatively easy. == Performing ==

=== Hearing yourself ===

This is a different approach to amplifying your sound. There is typically only one amplified version of your sound entering the room. That will be the Cylindrical Radiator®. Typically it will be set up behind you. Unlike conventional approaches, you will not be behind the main speakers going to the room.

How does it sound? - It may seem unusual for a few minutes because you are hearing yourself in much the same way the audience is hearing you. This is a big difference because you will be hearing yourself in the context of the room instead of out of context in the monitor.
Where do I stand? - Usually in front of the Cylindrical Radiator®. Sometimes beside it. If you are in front of it, an ideal would be approximately 7-10 feet. This is easy to work out if you have the standard 15 foot cable. Assuming you have the Remote mounted on your mic stand, the cable should be a straight run back to the Power Stand.
Where is the monitor? - No monitor required. You will be hearing yourself through the same Cylindrical Radiator® that the audience is hearing.
Where is the reverb? - This is typically not required because you will be hearing the natural reverb in the room not a monitor mix from a floor wedge.

"Sing as loud as you're going to sing with your lips touching the windscreen and adjust the trim so that the LED just flickers RED. (You can do this with the channel and master volumes on the remote turned all the way down. Remember that when you want to be your loudest vocally, you're lips should be touching the windscreen. You can always "work" the mic by backing away from it to lower volume but always remember that when you need to be loudest, you're kissing that windscreen. This technique is true for ANY live amplification system, not just ours. Please stay in touch with us here and let us know how you, er, well, make out." -- Ken-at-Bose

You will probably find that you hear yourself better with this system than in other live music situations. If you are new to the experience, you may want to back off from the microphone. Try this instead. Get up closer to the mic. Relax and get used to hearing yourself. You will find it is easier to sing when you can hear.

"Many owners have found singing through {{L1s}} to be reminiscent of singing in unamplified groups (big family, in my case), but different, sonically better. Unamplified, we control our timbre and dynamics with just our bodies - No mics to ''technique''. With the {{L1}}, staying ''on the mic'' (the simplest of techniques) allows us to sing that way, using our ''head to toes'' as our preamp and our ''lungs'' as our volume control. Here's where it gets better - With much more available volume, therefore much more dynamic range and coverage way out into the room, we can still bring it down to that unamplified-level whisper, (and everyone, singers and audience, can hear every nuance - I LOVE THAT!) and then bring it back up to the brink of excess! === Feedback ===

Feedback occurs when sound coming from the Cylindrical Radiator® is reintroduced into the System and amplified again. You typically hear either a high pitched squeal or a low pitched howl. The first usually comes from a vocal microphone and the second is more likely from an acoustic instrument like a Guitar.

* Point the mic above the Cylindrical Radiator® and slightly to the left or right of it
* Practice close mic technique "eat the mic"
* Avoid leaving the mic pointed in the general direction of the Cylindrical Radiator® with nothing in between.
* Check the gain staging. If you have the input sensitivity set too high, it can be difficult to avoid feedback.
* Use the remote to turn down the highs a little bit.
* Try presets #03 or #04 (High Gain Bright, High Gain Normal)

==== Instrument Feedback (howl) ====
The most likely source of a low end howl is an acoustic instrument like an Acoustic Guitar.

* Change the angle of the B1. Just change the direction at which it is pointed. Avoid having it pointed directly at the body of an acoustic Guitar.
* Use the Remote to turn down the lows a little bit. This will tend to clean up the mix overall even if you are not experiencing feedback.
* Try preset #44 or #85 (Sound Hole Notch)
Leaving the stage: Always turn down the R1 Remote Control Master Level.

Where is the sound-guy?

The R1 Remote gives you the final say about how you will sound in performance. The System once set properly is very stable and does not require a lot of real time tweaking. It is there for you to use if you want, but it does not have to distract you from doing the show.

Find the Master Level (ringed in red - center bottom of the R1 Remote). This is your main control for all the sound coming out of the System. You will want to turn it down when you are not actively using the System.
Use Channel 1 and 2 Level controls (just above the Master) to work out the balance between the two channels.

Use the Tone controls. Start with all these straight up at 12 o'clock and adjust to suit you.

Important: There is a tiny delay between making an adjustment and hearing the difference. Make small adjustments and then listen for difference. Otherwise you may tend add too much EQ.
Make sure that the Remote is visible and easily accessible to you as you are playing. Use the velcro to make it stationary so you can adjust the controls with one hand.

== Stage Volume ==

You and your audience are going to be hearing your performance in a new way. To be heard and understood you will probably run your stage at a lower volume than you have with other equipment.

== Getting Ready ==
This section will suggest things that you can do to prepare to use the System for the first time. For example:
Rehearsal

When you are rehearsing, stand or sit in the same positions as you will when performing. You want to hear yourself in the same way in rehearsal and performance so that making the transition from one to the other is relatively easy. One of the features of the System is localization: being able to hear everyone in their relative positions on stage. It is good to get a sense of that before you get to the stage.

If you are a vocalist, one of the single most important things you can do is practice your microphone technique. You get the best [[Gain Before Feedback]] using close microphone technique. The presets for vocal mics are designed for that (close micing) technique.

: Thinking out loud...I'd love to see an L1 set up for guitarists to hear and/or try all the different tone methods that we discuss here on the forum - almost a "guitar clinic". For instance, maybe ASAT could set his rig up, and demo for 5 minutes, and then Chuck-at-Bose could do his, Steve could break out his Womanizer, someone who mics an amp do theirs (is Sarno's Emery still there?), etc etc. Having a pile of preamps, pedals, and toys would be like finding a buried treasure to most of us. It seems like there are a lot of bass players coming, too. So maybe they'd want a similar "bass clinic" to try different things. Giving each player 5 minutes to demonstrate their tone and how they get it could be a lot of fun.

We will migrate Doug's ideas (above) into Chuck's notes.

== Chris Ickler: Understanding ToneMatch™ technology ==
Narrators in the [http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/musicians/tonematch.jsp Taylor/Bose video] are having some difficulty explaining the ToneMatch™ concept simply, so the video tries to solve that problem by providing multiple explanations and by conveying the enthusiasm of the people involved instead.

Chris Ickler has some ideas on how to talk about this at the Fall L1 Owners Conference and maybe that will lead to a shorter, more accurate message about ToneMatch technology.

Nobody can ToneMatch a system that doesn’t have uniform coverage. (It’s like trying to impose a house curve on an installed system that has spotty coverage.) Certainly no triple system has uniform coverage. Even if you decided to ToneMatch every instrument through every speaker of a triple system, you would have to nail the performers’ shoes to the floor and the audience would have to take turns standing in the "ToneMatched" sweet spot of the FOH system. ToneMatch technology only has audible benefit AFTER you solve the coverage problem.

* So the first problem of amplified music is to get the same tone everywhere. The L1 is the solution.
* The second problem of amplified music is to get the right tone everywhere. ToneMatch is the solution.
* No one can deliver the second solution before they deliver the first solution.

We had this on the agenda for the Big Sur Conference but never got to it.

== Cliff Goodwin: Arranging for L1 Ensembles ==
Cliff was music director and guitarist for the Joe Cocker Band (live and studio) for twelve years. He developed and plays guitar in The Linemen, the ensemble that introduced the L1™ system to the world in 2004-2004.

The L1 approach solved the problem for many, including those attending the conference, of Hearing Together. Now there's so much to learn about Playing Together.

The idea would be for Cliff to work with an ensemble at the Conference putting arranging a few songs and using the deep principles he's developed. Attendees would observe and ask questions of Cliff.

In the evening, Cliff would demonstrate "finished product" with The Linemen, allowing attendees to ask questions about his choices on the five songs used to introduce the L1 system. A final set of songs could be added for Monday entertainment, with spouses, loved ones, favorite waiters and waitresses etc. to enjoy.

Chuck would demonstrate the values/shortcomings of using conventional amps, various micing techniques, modelers (amp and/or guitar), ups and downs of using time-based effects, etc…
